Club History

Newton Rovers were formed in 2011 and entered the South Devon Football League for season 2011/12.

The first ever game was a friendly against Buckland Athletic 3rds which ended in a 2 – 3 defeat.

First ever game, against Buckland Athletic Thirds.

The first ever league game was a Division 6 game played at Bakers Park against Kingsbridge and Kellaton on 03/09/11.

Rovers’ first ever goal in a competitive match was scored by Ryan Gillingwater in the above game which ended in a 3 – 0 win.

The first booking went to Lee Fletcher for deliberate handball against Langdon in a Herald Cup First Round game on 01/10/11.

The first player to be sent off was Matt Gill (who else could it be?) for throwing a punch in retaliation in a Div 6 match against Salcombe Town on 10/12/11. It was also one of the quickest ever sending offs as he had just come on as sub and touched the ball just twice!

His punishment for this was a 3 game ban and £35.00 fine; we also still charged him match fees!

The first ever league away game was against Broadhempston United Res on 15/10/11.

We won the above game 1 – 3.

The club’s first mascot was Jake Cogavin (now a player himself and son of  reserve team player /manager Shane).

The first ever penalty we gave away was for a bad tackle by Lewis Gill (is anyone surprised?) in a Division 6 game against Riviera Utd on 12/11/11.

A Veterans team was formed in 2013 to play friendlies and the reserve team followed for season 14/15.

Newton Rovers Veterans, first ever game against Harbertonford Veterans

The club reached it’s first ever cup final when they played Broadmeadow in the 15/16 season Les Bishop Cup final played at Coach Road which we lost 1-3

First team, Les Bishop Cup final 2017.

The following year, we were back in the final again at Coach Road  only to lose on penalties after a 2 – 2 draw.

For the season 20/21, the club’s pitch at Bakers Park has had new drainage installed and new changing rooms are in the process of being built.
